The Divine Liturgy

The Divine Liturgy is what Byzantine Catholic Christians call our weekly Eucharistic service, similar to the Roman Catholic Mass. The Divine Liturgy is almost entirely chanted a capella. Most of the year we use the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, a liturgy codified in the 4th century by its namesake. The liturgy is broken up into two parts: the Liturgy of the Catechumen and the Liturgy of the Faithful, also known as the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist, respectively.

Vespers

Vespers is the Evening Prayer that begins the liturgical day. For this reason we have Great Vespers on Saturday evening to begin our Sunday prayer and follow it with Divine Liturgy. The practice of beginning the next day at sundown began with Judaism and which Catholic Christianity has kept to this day.

Matins

If you come early for Divine Liturgy and hear the community already singing, don’t worry you aren’t late for Divine Liturgy we are actually in the middle of Matins. Matins is our liturgical morning prayer for the whole community. Matins traditionally comes before Sunday Divine Liturgy.
